Beach Theme Projects

Sea Shell Cell Phone Cozy
Yet another cell phone cozy! I love making these, you use up scrap yarn, it works up quick, and it is all very satisfying! I made this on a 2 hour car ride, no wasting time in a car, I always bring a little project. I've always loved cowrie shells, in fact I've used them in a few crochet clothing projects with a beach theme. Wish I could show you these designs, but I can't (yet!)

Capri Pants with a Crochet Shell Edge
Here is another quick little project; some old khaki capris, a little bored with them, used my trusty hole punch and crocheted a shell edge. I'm not done yet, still evaluating the colors, I do love the tan and browns but I'm searching for another light brown in my stash. I'll post a pic when they are completed.

***update 08-10-07*** I've completed my edges, turned out pretty good. I think next time I might sew an edge on instead of using the hole punch, I'm anticipating that when I wash them the holes might fray a bit.

Summer beach theme ideas, quick and satisfying!

Hi Pam. What type of punch hole do you use? A belt type of punch holes?
I got myself a book, 150 crochet trims by Susan Smith. So I would love to practice some crochet edging.
That old khaki idea is excellent.

Hi Rina! I used a leather hole punch, purchased at Joanne's. Punches through jeans too! It is really a fun way to add some life to an old pair of capris, jeans, even a skirt! -Pam

Thanks for sharing, those are cool projects, Pam!
I wonder how you put the shells on there, do you glue gun it, or does it have a hole and you sew it?

Hi Mimi! The cowrie shells have a natural opening, I strung the shells on the yarn just like when using beads, then bring up a shell where you want it, I used a single crochet row to attach the shells, super easy! -Pam

Just saw your Uncommon Threads episode - great ideas! I love your little wrist purse - it would make an awesome cell phone holder.
I am rediscovering my crochet roots lately and falling in love with all of the new yarns and ideas. I love that we have blogs now to share these things with. My projects always come with copious amounts of dog hair built right in.

Hi Pam,
I was surfing the net one day, and stumbled on a tip for crocheters who sew. Any sewer who wants to put holes for crochet should run a wing needle around the edge once. This creates evenly spaced holes!
Love your site.

Both are great projects!

So, did you use an actual paper punch to make the holes on the capris or did you use an awl?

I love both of these ideas!

Hey Regina,
I didn't use an awl, I used a leather hole punch, (bigger and stronger than a paper punch) with several settings for hole width.

I just updated my post with the finished pic, I think next time I'll sew it on.
